My Fashion Design Ancestors

As any ordinary person I am curious about my ancestors. But as a fashion designer I am especially curious about my origin because I was told that some of my grandmothers and grandfathers, granduncles and grandaunts were doing the same thing I am doing now – fashion design. So, it took me some time to find information about my design roots in family archives. For about a half a year I have been reading letters of my family members that lived long before me and I have learned many peculiar facts not only about their personal lives but also their careers. First of all, it turned out that I had relatives from all kinds of countries such as Germany, Spain, Great Britain, and Russia. Second, most of my predecessors had to do something with sewing – they were employed as seamstresses, tailors, shoemakers, fashion designers, leather specialists, carpet-weaving specialists, etc. However only one message attracted my attention – it was connected with a new style of jeans - a “new look”.
One letter from our family archive has really stuck in my memory because it has the most unbelievable fashion story one can imagine. I would like to write about this story not only because of it unusual content but because of its direct connection to today’s fashion. This story is about the creation of low waist skinny jeans. Since skinny jeans are so popular nowadays and almost everybody has a pair of them in their closet, I believe this original story might be of interest to many contemporary designers and just common people. So my ancestors were also wearing skinny jeans. Isn’t it amazing?
