The New Look

Phillip told me that he remembered that enormous storm himself, it occurred in the midst of last July. This storm had destroyed many fair ships, boats, and buildings in the port (and even killed several people!) before sailors and port workers could do anything to save their fortunes. It was raining heavily for two days during that tempest and all people who were working in the port at that time soaked in both fresh and sea water. When, finally, on the second day the Nature yielded to its people and calmed the disaster and the sun appeared on the sky, workers were astonished. Their jeans had drastically shrunk! Apparently, the time they spent in the warm water (almost hot water on the seaside!) and then hot sun made their denim clothes to shrink and made their jeans very skinny. Many sailors loved this sudden transformation and started to wear these skinny jeans after regularly at the port. They hailed this new style as attractive and unusual, and called it “the new look.” Skinny jeans would cover sailors’ legs tightly and make men look taller, slimmer, and stronger. Some even cut their jeans to the waist level, which created a style of super low skinny jeans.
So, my dear sister, by pure accident a new fashion trend emerged in the city of Genoa and now, I have heard, spreading fast across Europe. Phillip also said that some tailors in the city are seriously thinking to sew such low waist skinny jeans for sale. He said, though, skinny jeans proved to be really impractical at work on the ship deck. One respected captain complained to Phillip that some sailors had tried to wear skinny jeans on board but were punished after for doing that because they could not walk fast upright and were constantly falling as soon as the ship or boat began moving. These jeans are indeed too tight for working on the ship and require substantial efforts when walking.
So the legend begins...I will write you more about this next time since I am planning on inviting Phillip to our ballroom party next week. I hope you enjoyed this story and I am myself should start considering to work more with denim (not like I don’t have enough work at my shop!). Oh, well fashion indeed changes fast and as a fashion designer I’d better keep with it! Don’t forget about a new look!

   With unconditional love,
   Your sister Maria Garcia
