The Story of Skinny Jeans |
Before I introduce this letter to my curious reader, I would like to mention that it is dated 187* and, indeed, has a character of its own. Maria (Maria Garcia) is my grand grandmother and Isabel (Isabel Hernandez) is her younger sister, my grand grandaunt (both from my mother’s side). My grand grandmother was one of the most recognized and respected fashion designers in Venice, Italy. She sewed mostly for men and for that reason was very interested in men’s fashion. So, the letter begins... My Dearest Isabel, I hope you, John, Catherine, and little Eugenio are all well. Eugenio must have learned to talk already, isn’t he? He is such an adorable but naughty little boy. Won’t he be three next week? I am wishing him the best there is in this world and, of course, mama’s delicious fairy-cake on his birthday. I have heard a story from one of my dear friends that it’s been surprisingly very sunny in London recently, so I hope that you and your wonderful family enjoying this pleasant weather very much. Oh, I cannot describe you how much I miss you, my dear sister. Since you left, I can hardly sew or walk in our little garden with almost everything reminding me of you. Especially, the bench, Isabel, how many hours did we spend on that bench with you talking and singing last time?! Good times, shall I say, fly fast away. I just really hope that you will come to visit us again next spring and bring your lovely family with you. We shall definitely go for a walk by the sea again and go shopping in the city. Be sure we’ll call on our beloved Kohls Coupons and Sears Coupon Code if you come, because there are lots of our favorite clothes there. Knowing our mutual likeness and appreciation for fashion, I decided not to conceal this interesting story from you in this letter. It’s quite a striking story that my friend Phillip Lucas told me about a week ago. It is one of the most unbelievable and queer fashion stories that I have heard of for a long time. Lucas, on the other hand, is highly regarded in our fashion circle and I must rely on his truthfulness and good intent. And besides, you seem to love stories about your ancestors. This story originates here in Italy, in the beautiful port of Genoa. It’s funny to mention this fact but the port of this city in its color does not differentiate much from the sea or the sky. With the exception of the colorful ships and port buildings, almost every worker and sailor in the port wears clothing made of blue denim. We, fashion designers, call them bleu de Gênes in French, the blue of Genoa or simply jeans. I can see why these types of workers are interested in denim. It is an incredibly thick and durable material that, it seems to me, only time can wither. So, the story goes that one huge storm changed the Genoa’s denim fashion once and for all. |
